My Career since I was honorably discharged from active duty in the United States Air Force in 1976 has been primarily in the aviation field. In 1989 when Eastern Airlines closed down I started schooling for my PTA license. I accumulated 500 hours of volunteer service at Baptist Hospital in West Kendall, Florida while continuing to work, full and part time, in various aircraft repair stations. I completed my Associated of Arts degree in 1995 and graduated from Miami Dade Community College in 1998 with highest honors and received my PTA licensed. I graduated at the top of my class receiving a Certificate of Outstanding Academic Achievement in 1994 and Outstanding Academic Excellence upon graduation in 1998. I did my clinical hours in a sports rehab clinic, worked with the PT’s in South Miami Hospital doing post-op treatments and finally ended my clinical requirements working for Lynn Smith in Wound Care at the same hospital. Unfortunately, in 1998 the HMOs had changed the physical therapy charging structure and PTs and PTAs were being laid of statewide so I was forced to continue with my aviation career. However, I have maintained my license as clear/active with extensive continuous education. My treatment experience was limited to friends and relatives, including my mother as she tried to recover from a brain tumor operation and my father as he slowly degenerated from hardening of the basal ganglia, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis and Parkinson’s disease. I am familiar with the use of TENS, gait training, MPS, proprioception mirror therapy and other basic modalities. I was recently laid off after 18 years with the same Repair Station and would like to finish my working career practicing as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Regards, David Buechel
